This Action aims to introduce innovative methods during the welcome phase of refugees.
In Italy there is a standard acceptance procedure of refugees which does not make them feel welcome. The welcome is very static and at times also unpleasant. Refugees that arrive can feel unwanted and therefore retaliate against the country that is accommodating them. This can have a negative impact on their behaviour within the country.
Through sport activities, the project aimed to find new and innovative ideas to welcome refugees ensuring a positive reaction. With the different Lazio sports clubs, we provided free training sessions for the refugees with the end objective of bringing them into the elite team and giving them a realistic goal.
Being part of a team that welcomed the young refugees made them feel happy and gave them an objective to work towards. This impacted the mentality of the refugees as once they arrived, they felt that they were running away and through this initiative they are looking towards new horizons.
